Transport

There are many voluntary organisations who are happy to help with transporting patients to the surgery.

Transport Plus

Transport Plus is a community transport service which helps eligible adults get to essential health, social and wellbeing services. They mostly use volunteer car drivers. A driver will pick you up at your house, or the nearest safe place, and provide a door-to-door service.

How to book

Call them on 0344 800 8020 (Monday to Friday 09:00-17:00). They need at least three working days’ notice before you want to travel. You can book a journey up to a maximum of two weeks in advance. Whilst they do their very best to undertake all journeys, requests are subject to transport being available. You may have to share your journey with another person.

Who is eligible to use this volunteer community transport service?

Adults who:

  • Have a specific health or social need, but are not eligible for free transport.
  • Are unable to use or access normal public transport services.
  • Cannot access services using transport provided by family or friends.
  • Need a journey for their essential shopping, e.g. food or medication.
  • Are not in receipt of any higher rate of disability payment or any form of PIP.
  • Have recently had a heart attack, stroke or uncontrolled seizures in the last 3 months, they will need be to be accompanied by a friend or relative.

To use the service you need to be able to get in and out of a car unaided. Unfortunately they are unable to take people who travel in a wheelchair. You can take a carer or assistant with you, to help you at your appointment or service.

Where can a driver take you?

  • Health-related journeys to medical centres such as hospitals, doctors or health clinics.
  • Other medically-related appointments and preventative health care. For example, dentist, optician, physiotherapy or occupational therapy.
  • Day care and respite care.
  • Essential shopping.
  • Social activities or activities to help with general wellbeing.

Priority will be given to journey requests within Norfolk. However journeys outside of Norfolk will be considered – for example to get to a hospital appointment.

Cost

A charge of 45p per mile, is made for each journey. Payment should be made directly to the driver. The charge includes mileage when the volunteer travels to and from your house. We always try to arrange the nearest driver to you, so charges are kept to a minimum. If this is not possible then our staff will discuss this with you. If you want to know the estimated cost of your journey before you travel, please ask when booking.

In some circumstances, we can arrange for the driver to wait at your appointment venue for a maximum of one hour. For longer appointments the driver will leave and return. This may incur an additional journey charge.

Cancellations

Call 0344 800 8020 to cancel a booking. Please give as much notice as possible.
Late cancellations may incur a charge if the driver has already left to collect you.

Norwich Door to Door minibuses operate week days, serving Greater Norwich.

There is no limitation on the type of journey, whether for business or pleasure, medical or shopping or visiting.

Community Car Scheme

A pool of local volunteer drivers use their own cars to take passengers on certain journeys for which there are no suitable public transport facilities e.g. doctor’s surgeries and in some circumstances, to the hospital. Fares are charged and drivers receive a mileage allowance.

If you want to use the Community Car Scheme, you should book your journey by ringing David Goodman on 01603 748741. Please give as much notice as possible of your need to travel.
